Placerville Jail Overview

Placerville Jail, also described by El Dorado County as the Placerville Facility, is operated by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Custody Division. It is not inside Alpine County, and it is not owned by Alpine County. Its Alpine relevance comes from Alpine's no-jail structure. Alpine official sources state that jail services are contracted to El Dorado County and Calaveras County. The Alpine Grand Jury report also states that Alpine prisoners have been jailed in South Lake Tahoe and Placerville under El Dorado County contract.

The facility is a county jail, not a state prison. That means the roster is booking-based and focuses on people held in local custody before trial, after local sentencing, while awaiting transport, or under a hold that keeps them in the jail. Once a person is sentenced to California state prison, the correct search changes to CDCR CIRIS. If the case becomes federal or immigration custody, BOP or ICE systems may be needed instead.

Because the same custody division runs Placerville and South Lake Tahoe, some roster, mail, and visiting rules are systemwide, while visiting hours differ by facility.

Placerville Jail Capacity

El Dorado County publishes a larger capacity figure for Placerville than for South Lake Tahoe. The custody page says the Placerville Facility has capacity for 303 inmates plus 8 outpatient medical beds. That is a Placerville jail operating figure, not a count of Alpine County inmates. Alpine-specific contract-bed average daily population was not separately published in the official Alpine sources reviewed.

For Alpine County, the population point is about routing rather than a local bed count. A person arrested in Alpine may be outside Alpine County soon after arrest. The custody record can sit in El Dorado's jail system, while the arresting-agency record remains with Alpine Sheriff's Office and the formal court case sits with Alpine Superior Court.

Placerville Jail Roster Search

Placerville Jail inmates are searched through the El Dorado County Citizen RIMS incarcerated people portal. Use the incarcerated people module for the current jail roster. The search can be narrowed by date range and name fields, and the table can show booking ID, name when enabled, booking date, arresting agency, arrest location, total bail, and status. Expanded records may include charge rows and photo fields if the agency publishes them for that record.

1. Start with El Dorado Citizen RIMS and search for the person's first and last name.
2. Add a start date or end date if the arrest date is known and the name is common.
3. Open the matching booking row and review the booking number, status, bail, and arresting agency fields.
4. Confirm whether the person is held at Placerville or another facility before planning a visit or sending legal mail.
5. If the person is not listed, call Alpine Sheriff or El Dorado custody because release, transfer, sealed status, or a booking appointment can affect visibility.

An Alpine County court case will not be fully explained by a Placerville roster record. Jail charges can differ from the complaint filed in court, and the court has no online public case portal.

Placerville Jail Contact

Placerville Jail contact is most useful for housing confirmation, visiting status, and facility-specific mail or account questions. Alpine Sheriff's Office remains the first call when the arrest has just occurred and the destination jail is unknown. Alpine Superior Court is the record source for filed criminal cases, copies, and name searches after the District Attorney files a complaint.

Placerville Jail Visiting

Placerville has broader posted visiting days than South Lake Tahoe. El Dorado rules are still strict and systemwide. Visits are first come, first served, proper identification is required, legal holidays are closed, and only one visitor may visit an inmate at a time unless a minor is escorted by a parent or legal guardian. Former inmates and people under parole, probation, or PRCS may need prior written approval before visiting.

The El Dorado visiting page lists the schedule and conduct rules. It also bars cell phones, cameras, electronics, handbags, writing supplies, books, food, and beverages from the visiting area. Visitors should leave property secured outside the visiting area unless the lobby has lockers available.

Placerville Jail Mail

Placerville uses the same El Dorado mail and communications system as South Lake Tahoe. Non-legal physical mail is sent to the Longview, Texas processing address, scanned into the system, delivered electronically, and destroyed. Legal and medical mail must go to the facility where the inmate is housed. That makes housing confirmation important before sending privileged correspondence.

The El Dorado inmate correspondence page gives the mail size and message-fee rules. Standard scanned mail must include no more than five pages, use the front side only, fit within 8.5 by 11 inches, and include no more than one photo per mailing. Money, magazines, bulk mail, newspapers, books, legal mail, and medical mail do not go to the Texas processing address.

Placerville Booking Fields

A Placerville Jail booking record is not a full criminal history. It is a custody record tied to a jail intake event. Citizen RIMS field inventory shows booking number, booking date and time, name when enabled, arresting agency, arrest location, total bail, status, and charge rows. Photos and demographics may appear only when the agency enables those fields and a photo is present.

Placerville Jail Services

El Dorado publishes a jail program list that applies to its custody system. The El Dorado inmate services page lists adult education, GED, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, high school diploma, HEARTS substance-abuse education, religious services, AA or NA, parenting, Moral Recognition Therapy, and anger management.

Programs depend on custody length and jail management. El Dorado notes that Adult Education requires an inmate to want to learn and be in custody at least six weeks, so many short Alpine County stays will not fit every program. Placerville remains part of Alpine County inmate search because Alpine lacks jail space and relies on outside custody systems.
